An extensive two-month cruise around the Land Down Under is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly lady who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant island.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the excursion for a pause. The ship departed without her and went back later that day after the personnel realised the woman was missing.

A large-scale search operation discovered her body the following day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, together with police and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the cruise operator said that travelers and staff on the ship were notified that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior technical problems".

Through an announcement, he added that travelers would be issued a full refund, and said the company was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also published an revised announcement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would visit the liner in the port city upon its arrival.

Sequence of Events

The ship initially left the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the expedition at the time of the elderly woman's demise. The tropical location was the initial destination on the journey.

Travelers on the vessel - who generally pay large sums of dollars to join the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or snorkelling.

Family Reaction

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her family was "surprised and saddened that the liner left the island after an organised outing without my parent".

In her statement, she characterized her mother as an "active 80-year-old" who was a member of a hiking club.

"According to scant information we have been informed, it seems that there was a breakdown of care and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She added that she wished the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have undertaken that might have preserved Mum's being".

"Based on information from the police that it was a extremely warm afternoon, and mother fell ill on the uphill trek," she stated.

"They requested her to go back, alone. Then the vessel departed, apparently without conducting a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that sequence, or soon after, mum succumbed, by herself."

Operator Response

In a statement, the Chief Executive confirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with officials to aid their examination".

He said that the company was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had provided its full support to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Standards

The vessel caters for up to 120 guests with 46 crew, according to corporate details. It was specially constructed to reach distant regions of the Australian shoreline and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to ferry travelers on day excursions.

Events of this nature are infrequent, and cruise ships have protocols to document which travelers are boarding or getting off, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," one expert commented.

Cruise lines regard these procedures very seriously and have "clever tech in place to avoid such events from taking place," the specialist added.

"This is presumably a shocking - and sad - one-off."
