Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to St James' Park on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
