Space Traveler Shares Depression Following Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised experts in various fields.
